1. What is the BMS?

The Battery Management System (BMS) or Battery Pack Control Module (BPCM) is an essential ECU in modern vehicles, especially electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids, that manages and monitors the performance of the battery.

You can find many types of these batteries in Tesla, Volvo, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, Toyota, Honda, ...cars.

It manages essential battery functions, such as monitoring voltage, temperature, current, state of charge (SoC), and cell balancing, in lithium-ion (Li-ion) LiFePO4 batteries. The voltage of these batteries can be different, like 48V, 16V, and 12V.

These batteries are used in many automotive brands, including Volvo, BMW, Mercedes, Tesla, Toyota, BYD, Porsche, Audi, and others.

Its primary responsibilities include:

  • Voltage, current, and temperature monitoring to ensure the battery operates within safe limits
  • State of charge (SoC) management to accurately track the battery's remaining power
  • Cell balancing to ensure each battery cell is evenly charged, optimizing performance and lifespan
  • Protection against overcharging, overheating, or under-voltage events that could damage the battery or vehicle

The BMS also controls critical safety features, including shutting down or limiting power if it detects a fault or crash, sometimes preventing the vehicle from starting or charging.

2. What is the Meaning of BMS Reset?

The BMS can trigger safety measures, like limiting charging or preventing the vehicle from starting, if it detects anomalies such as under-voltage, over-voltage, temperature issues, or crash impacts.

The BMS (Battery Management System) reset refers to restoring the BMS to its default or normal operating state after it has detected an issue, such as a fault, crash, impact, or battery-related error.

This process is done by programming the proper file, calibration, or software (dump) into the BMS memory, EEPROM, or MCU.

3. Why Do We Reset the BMS or the Battery Management System?

When the BMS/BPCM detects a battery issue, like low cell voltage, it triggers a safety mode that prevents the car from starting or charging, even if the battery is replaced.

Unfortunately, the unit continues to register the fault, often leading to costly replacements from the manufacturer. The errors can not be cleared by regular scan tools or diagnostic tools and need special programming and tools.

Resetting the BMS is necessary when:

  1. Crash events trigger a crash-related error that stops the car from starting or charging
  2. The car has been parked for a long time, and the battery is discharged.
  3. Battery replacements are made, but the BMS still shows errors or does not recognize the new battery
  4. Error codes related to the battery remain after fixing the underlying issue (Like under-voltage warnings)

Usually, these DTCs also mean that the battery BMS needs to be reset:

P0A80, P0A7F, P0A90, P0AC0, P0AFA, P0AA6, P0AE0, P0AA100, P0AA400, P0DE6FB, P0DE6FA, P0A0E00, P1D2800, P0AA400, P1C8000, P18051C, P1D2800, P1D2700, P1D2777, P1D2785, P1D2771, P1D2885, P1D2877, P1A10, P1A77, P180D1D, P1D799A, P1614FA, P180D64, P14F300, P180D64, P1CB400, P1D7800, B183349, B183384, B183371, B1193, B1418, B0001, U3000, U01A200, U01A100, U01A000, and so on.

ARMHEX BMS Reset Online Service can clear these faults, restore normal operation, and allow the vehicle to function as intended without replacing the BMS unit.
